Reproductive Health, Birth Control, and Abortion Coverage

Care for every part of you

The State of Washington provides Apple Health (Medicaid) members with reproductive and sexual health benefits to keep you healthy and plan if and when you get pregnant.

Covered services include no-cost screenings and exams, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), counseling, birth control, emergency contraceptives, and abortion services from in-state providers.

Reproductive health


Reproductive health (sexual health) services, and preventive services like your annual wellness exam are covered with Apple Health, so they cost you nothing. Covered services include:

  • Routine pelvic exam and Pap test (cervical cancer screening)
  • Pregnancy testing
  • Treatment for ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage
  • Sexually transmitted infections (STI) testing and treatment
  • HIV/AIDS screening
  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine
  • Hepatitis B Immunization

Birth control and family planning


Family planning coverage can help you prevent pregnancy or help you manage when you become pregnant. Family planning counseling, including the doctor visits to discuss your options, and the birth control method that works best for you, are covered.

All of these services cost you nothing.

  • Birth control pill
  • Birth control shot
  • IUD (inter-uterine devices)
  • Condoms (male and female)
  • Permanent birth control (vasectomy for males and tubal ligation for females)
  • Natural family planning counseling
  • Emergency contraceptive pill
  • And other types of hormone treatments

Emergency contraception

Emergency contraceptive pills can stop a pregnancy before it starts up to 5 days after unprotected sex when taken as directed*. You do not need a prescription and can get emergency contraceptive pills at any pharmacy that accepts Apple Health coverage in-person or online, your clinic, or doctor’s office at no cost to you.

Request extra emergency contraceptive pills at no cost to keep at home, in case you need them later. Just ask your pharmacist for a larger supply and show your CHPW member ID and ProviderOne Services card.

Over-the-counter (OTC) contraceptives

Get condoms, birth control (Opill), and emergency contraceptive pills, like Plan B®, at any pharmacy that accepts Apple Health without a prescription (over the counter), at no cost to you.

Abortion services


Washington State laws require all health plans to include abortion services as part of their reproductive health services benefits, including follow-up care for any complications. In the State of Washington, you have the right to have an abortion, and the right to refuse an abortion, at any age, without anyone else’s consent.

You pay nothing. If you have Apple Health, abortion care from specific medical providers in Washington is provided at no cost.

You choose where to go for care CHPW Apple Health members can self-refer and go to any abortion clinic in Washington State, even if they are not in-network with CHPW. For more information about where to go for care, visit the Health Care Authority’s (HCA) webpage on abortion.

Your privacy is protected. Washington State laws and federal health care regulations (like HIPAA) protect your privacy. You decide who is authorized to receive information about the health care services you receive, even if someone else signed you up for your health coverage (including parents and spouses).

What are the types of abortion?

There are two main types of abortions that are available. Which option you use can depend mostly on how many weeks you have been pregnant.

Medication abortion or the “abortion pill” is when you take medicines to end an early pregnancy, like the drug mifepristone (also called Mifeprex). This can be effective up to 11 weeks (77 days) after the first day of your last period.

Surgical abortions orin-clinic abortions” are only performed in health clinics by providers trained in abortion care. The type you get depends on how many weeks you have been pregnant and other factors.

Where do I go for abortion care?

CHPW’s Community Health Centers do not provide abortion services. But CHPW Apple Health members can go to any abortion clinic in Washington State, even if it is not in-network, like:

Anti-abortion facilities sometimes called “Crisis Pregnancy Centers” or “Pregnancy Resource Centers” may have licensed medical providers on staff, but they do not provide abortions or other sexual and reproductive health services.

Do I need a referral to get an abortion?

No. You do not need a referral from anyone. Apple Health members can go directly to any abortion provider in Washington for abortion care without pre-approval from CHPW. You do not need to go to your primary doctor or your primary care clinic first. To find a clinic, visit Washington Department of Health’s webpage on abortion.

I am under 18. Do I need permission from a parent or guardian?

No. You do not need your parent or guardian’s permission or “parental consent” in Washington to access birth control, reproductive health services, or abortion care.

People of any age have the right to independently consent for their own reproductive care, including testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and abortion care. Even if you are under 18 years of age, you do not need anyone else’s permission to get an abortion or any other sexual and reproductive health care services.
