We have all heard that the Trump Administration has decided to phase out the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (known as DACA) over a period of six months. The administration’s policies toward immigrants have been of grave concern since January, and this recent decision is nothing less than unconscionable.

For over 17,000 Washingtonians, DACA has meant freedom from fear and hiding. It has allowed our friends and neighbors to believe they could realize their dreams in a country that recognizes their value. DACA has also benefited our economy by providing people with opportunities to increase skills and get an education. For the government to now betray these “dreamers” is terribly wrong.

Community Health Plan of Washington works every day to care for all people. We believe in strengthening our communities by embracing diversity, expanding opportunities, increasing access, and improving circumstances for everyone. Phasing out DACA is counter to our values and our work.

Together, we must now seek justice from congress. Many of our legislators are committed to permanent protection for DACA recipients. We will stand shoulder to shoulder with our neighbors to seek this remedy. We will not be silent in the face of this injustice.
