A brief history of CHPW
- In 1992, Washington’s low-cost clinics (Community Health Centers) realized too many people were being neglected by traditional insurance. They got together and started Community Health Plan of Washington.
- CHPW is the state’s first not-for-profit managed care plan founded by Community Health Centers.
- Today, we’re still the only not-for-profit to provide managed care to Apple Health members.
- Always working to improve our services, we expanded to cover Medicare members in 2007.

Commitment to diversity
Our focus on advancing health equity stems from our founding by Community Health Centers to ensure access to quality health care for all people in Washington and breaking down unjust and systemic barriers to healthy communities. This is the work we are all engaged in and requires us to both develop our internal capacity to recognize and address inequities, as well as build on our member and provider-facing opportunities to reduce disparities and improve the health of those historically marginalized.
Our commitment:
-
- We strive to apply an equity lens to all our work.
- Reduce health disparities.
- Become an anti-racist organization
- Create an equitable work environment
